I love the movie (Christian Bale!!!) so I read the book. And now I want to watch the movie again!! The beginning is exactly the same, but the ending is all different. The book has an entire storyline about Sophie's two sisters and stepmother - I don't remember them at all in the movie. And the movie has some really nefarious looking characters (the Witch of the Waste's servants) who are much less scary in the book. The movie has Howl turning into a b ...more

I have no idea why I hadn't read this book yet. I love Diana Wynne Jones, in fact her books are some of the first I remember reading after the Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables books. Her writing is light and lucid enough for a young child, but deep enough in plot and unexpected twists and turns to satisfy a more mature reader.

We watched the movie and I couldn't figure out what was going on, so I had to read the book! The book was much more comprehensible than the movie.
