The only Dickens book I've completely read, but I love this classic. There's something heartbreaking about the theme of loving someone who really didn't love you back. I was also taken with Bronte's Wuthuring Heights about the same time I read this as an adolescent. As a young girl these two books made such an impression by portraying really powerful romantic love that was overwhelming and heartbreaking--something up to that point I had only experienced through books.

Young Pip acquires an unknown benefactor which allows him to become a gentleman. Along the way he meets some quirky characters: the very pretty Estella, the jilted lover Miss Havisham, Magwitch the convict and Jaggers, the lawyer. Which one is his benefactor? And is being a gentleman all it's cracked up to be? This is my very favorite Dickens novel.

The only part I enjoyed about this book was the original ending...it's the best part of the entire novel!
