One of my all-time favorite books is The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood. So I used this opportunity to read her first published novel. I found it very strange. I think it will be a book that I will think about for a while, slowly digesting its meaning.

Marian is a young woman in the 1960's, enjoying her job and independence. When her boyfriend proposes, she starts to feel like she is losing her sense of self. She feels more and more consumed as she makes wedding plans and prepares to give up her independent life. Food becomes symbolic to Marian; she can no longer eat certain foods and she also begins to have panic attacks.

I waver between 3 and 4 stars for this one. It is not as strong as some of Atwood's other books.
