i resisted reading this book because of all of the critical acclaim - but then i realized i broke down and read Twilight just because of the hype, so i had no excuse.

and i'm glad i didn't.

this is the story of a boy who leaves the rez in search of something more. there's racism, there's native american culture, there's the harsh reality of life.

Wow, wow, wow. I hadn't given this book much thought since I first started hearing about it. I knew that a lot of readers out there thought it would be a contender for the Printz, so as a librarian specializing in teen services I thought I should read it. I can't think of any other book I have read this year that was so moving, so heart breaking, so funny and so full of hope. I haven't read all the new books this year, but I think this one deserve some serious recognition.

This book was not quite what I was expecting, but wonderful none the less. I've been watching for it since hearing Sherman Alexie speak at the Hydrocephalus Association conference in 2004. As I was reading, I hesitated about passing this on to my daughters (it's written from the perspective of a 14-year-old boy with fully active hormones), but by the time I finished, I'd decided that the book's messages were just too important for them to miss. ...more

I loved this!! Both my husband and my 11 year old son read and enjoyed this one, so I figured it was time for me to give it a read. I was really glad I did; not only was it fast to read (yeah for YA!), but it was intriguing.
