I’ve read about FLDS communities before, specifically in Under the Banner of Heaven. But I’m not sure any FLDS community compares to the one that has been built by the Jeffs. Because of that, Carolyn Jessop’s story is certainly an interesting one. Through her eyes, you see the transition from a fairly standard FLDS community (with all of its many inherent faults) to one that is perverted for the sake of power, and to sate the lust of an elite group of men.

Hard to believe this stuff happens in today's world. The older I get the less things surprise me, though. What a distasteful read--on so many levels. Yuck!

So gripping and awful and fascinating. My only real complaint is how much it veered between really detailed scenes and long passages of vague generalizations about, say, the relationships between Carolyn and the other wives, which seemed thinly drawn and vaguely defensive. I couldn't stop thinking about it for ages after I finished, in a really upsetting way.
