This short, beautifully plotted novel begins with a crime - a woman (Laure) returns home in the evening and is robbed of her beautiful mauve handbag. It contains the treasures that would mean nothing to anyone else, but are everything to her. This book managed to do in 150 pages with The Storied Life of AJ Fikry failed to do in double the amount. The Red Notebook has intrigue, mystery and some romance. I can't really say much else without giving away spoilers.
Laure is on her way home from the Metro one night when she is mugged and her purse is stolen out of her hands. Without keys, wallet or phone, she makes her way to the hotel across the street to recoup for the night.

While out for a walk in his Paris neighborhood, a bookseller finds a woman’s purse sitting on a trash bin. He takes it to a nearby police station, but they are too busy and send him to another location. Instead, he decides to keep the bag and try to locate the owner. This is a weird mix of meet-cute and stalkerish.
