The book started out with such a great line: "When all is said and done, killing my mother came easily." I was intrigued with that and wanted so much more from the story. I made it about 50 pages or so before I became really disgusted with the whole thing and skimmed to the end for some resolution. What a waste of time. I don't recommend this one. ...more

Very unpleasant topic and if I had not been on a long car trip, might have abandoned it. Yet at the same time it was compelling and despite all of the low ratings, I think it was well written. I thought the relationship between Helen's parents interesting and also liked how perceptions change as the story unfolds. ...more

This started out really hard to get into, so depressing and dark. It got just a bit better as I read further, but I would not consider this book at all something I enjoyed reading or would recommend.

I really loved The Lovely Bones, so I was excited to read another novel by Alice Sebold. However, this story really fell short for me. I didn't feel emotionally connected to any of the characters. I really disliked this book. I was glad to read in other reviews that I wasn't the only one who could barely get past the first few chapters. I can't really say that I'm glad I kept going, but oh well. I found myself unable to relate to any of the main characters and only found common ground with the best friend, Natalie & the estranged daughter Emily for both of whom, I just felt awful.
