An absorbing and very thorough biography of Louis Zamperini (a 1936 Olympic track star), who survived a horrific bomber crash into the Pacific during World War II. After drifting for 2,000 miles, he and his buddy were captured by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp. They were tortured day after day until finally being liberated after Tokyo was occupied. Hillenbrand has captured the essence of one of the greatest generation's finest!

brilliant.
haunting.
i couldn't put it down.
and man, i would have broken. this book stands as a testament to the human spirit, and opens up an avenue of history that has been previously . . . not overlooked, but perhaps, glossed over.
war is horrible thing. no matter how you are going into it, it changes you.
i thought the end wrapped up a little quickly, but then again, it was kind of a relief.

Amazing story about an amazing man who has lived through so much. I love the way the author writes as well. She gives us a great story but in it she threads facts and statistics so that they aren't overwhelming, reading like a history book, but more informative, fitting with what is going on in the story of Louie. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone and everyone!!! There are some really hard parts to read, as the realities of war and POW camps are not hidden or written about lightly

This book was so enjoyable. Yes, it's non fiction, but it's written like a novel. You learn about the War in the Pacific through one soldier (who had a moderate amount of fame before the war) who becomes a P.O.W. It's engaging, it's shocking, but ultimately it's a tale of the human spirit as well as the depths of man's inhumanity to man. It's a tale of forgiveness... and now I sound like a promo for the film...

The story is amazing but the writing is disappointing. I felt as if I never really got to know any of the characters.
