[reread may 2011]: i needed to reread it before reading Red Glove. i kind of liked it even more the second time around, even though i knew the con and the outcome. i think the thing that annoys me the most is cassel's name. phillip, barron, sam, those are kind of normal names. but cassel? it kind of sounds weak. and annoying. but that's just me. it still makes me sad, in a good way.

i read this is new york on a work trip, and i kind of really didn't want to read it, because i'm not the biggest

This is the first book in the Curse Workers trilogy and I just reserved book 2. First of all, Jesse Eisenberg is the narrator and for just that, it was worth it. Also, I hadn't read anything by Holly Black and was very surprised by her unique writing style and ideas. Unique plot, interesting characters, great writing! I'm not a huge Jesse Eisenberg fan, but he does a really good job narrating the story. Already started the second in the series. ...more

Oh, but this universe it delightfully different. Sadly, I accidentally spoiled myself due to the internet for the big reveal when going to buy book two while in the middle of one, but the way it played out was still masterful. The characters are compelling and I love how everything magical has decided repercussions, and the generations and history and schools and friends.

And it definitely sent me on to reading the next one.

Cool premise, but not quite executed, very slow to start and then wraps up fast. Some content not for all readers.
