Blanche Dubois comes to live with her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski in New Orleans. She is unemployed, due to her promiscuity, and destitute, having lost her ancestral home. She and Stanley clash and he eventually rapes her. He arranges for her to be taken away by doctors in white. Williams uses themes of light, death and desire, the Kowalski world versus the Dubois world, and Freudian sexual references to add depth to his play.
