He belonged to the land and he could not live with any fullness until he felt the land under his feet and followed a plow in the springtime and bore a scythe in his hand at harvest.
I just don't know what to make of this little book. The nicest thing I can say is that it really made me crave a bowl of "good rice."
The characters have all the personality of a clod of dirt. I suppose one could say this is a story of rags to riches, to worse rags to better riches, and so on and so forth. Wang Lun ...more

I just had such a hard time identifying with Wang Lung - he's irrationally angry fairly frequently, and generally shallow, with a few fleeting moments of empathy for other characters. O-Lan was a much more sympathetic character, and I would have much more liked to read a trilogy about her. Maybe the point was not to Wang Lung so likeable, but I'm not sure if I'll choose to pick up the next two books or not.

Buck presents a view of China when the last emperor still reigned and tells the story of the farmer Wang Lung and his wife O-lan and their family. This book had a tremendous impact on me as a reader. I laughed and I cried. I loved it and hated it. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
