I really did not want to read this book. I thought it would be dumb and american and "spiritual" in that stupid way that Americans like to say things like, "Gosh, Buddhism is so cool. I feel so zen." Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised, because even when this woman got a bit too sappy for my taste, she was such a good memoir-writer that I really didn't mind. The stories in this book are really great.

I picked this book up because EVERYONE was talking about it. I borrowed a copy from someone else who said she hadn't particularly cared for it, but that I might have a different opinion. I can't say for sure what my opinion would have been had I finished the book, because I only made it through the first few pages.

I enjoyed reading this book because of the travel adventures and Ms. Gilbert's frankness about her own life. I especially liked the first part on Italy. But I found it overly self-indulgent.

Yes, I'm reading it again! But only the Italy part, to get ready for my trip to Rome in April!
