I cannot think of another time where I've read a book that was so depressing for 500+ pages and yet so completely hopefully in in the last line as to totally redeem the tone of the book. I loved this novel. The characters were just so full and complete and even though almost all convinced me that by my actions and thoughts I'm a saint compared to them, I could feel myself caring for their story, hoping things got better or at least resolved themselves suitably. It was rough going for me in the first few dozen pages of this novel, and I fought to re-engage myself several times throughout. At times I was made so uncomfortable by the complete awkwardness and desperation of the family in crisis that I felt I had to put the book down and walk away.
