This was a really great book and part of what has me loving it so much is that I can't stop thinking about it. I read it within a matter of an hour or two and it's still running through my mind. Why did she wind up with him? Why didn't she just admit her secret? Why couldn't he ever get over her? It was a really well-written book and it's one that I think is going to continue to make me think. I found myself comparing it to Lolita a lot, but liking this book better as I found the characters tole ...more

I thought this was a beautiful book. I had a few unanswered questions, but overall, I thought Schlink did a great job of telling such a unique story. I didn't really feel much sympathy for the narrator, but I didn't dislike him either. My grandmother grew up in Czechoslovakia and Germany, and I've never really gotten the answers I want about her childhood during the war so I love reading about that time in history. I am somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for this one. More thoughts later (maybe).

This is our January bookclub book, so I guess I am finally going to read it.

I thought this book was pretty good. I read it in only a few days. I liked the way Schlink wrote it as if it was the boy telling the story because it made it easier to follow and get into the story. I just wish you could have known a bit more about Frau Schmint and what she was thinking about her relationship with Michael and about what happened at her trial.

I had a lot of trouble with the style of writing. I just couldn't get into the story or the character. I felt very disconnected from the characters. It seems like a good book, it is translated from German and so I have to give some credit to the fact that things can be lost in translation and consider what I am losing by reading it in English. ...more

Very moving and sad. I saw the movie before I read the book, and I have to say, this one of the few times that I thought the movie actually did the book justice.
