A very packed read with -sometimes- too much description and details. I enjoyed some part of this book, especially because the narrator- Stingo- is very likable. But the parts about holocaust, Sophie's obsession with the crazy Nathan, and Nathan's own craziness- I didn't really dig them. This is the kind of book that could be better if it was shorter. Very depressing ending, too! ...more

This is one of those books where I was just so darn happy to be finished that I didn't care how it ended just that it did end. Listening to the 24 discs was an emotional journey: I laughed, I yelled at the characters for being stupid, I cheered every time the disc changed, and I did feel genuine heartbreak for the scenes from the concentration camp.

I'd call this book a literary novel in the sense that Styron takes the most meandering route possible to tell a story. He certainly likes to pull out
