so, i think i would have rated this higher if it hadn't been put in this "alternate universe". i am a little tired of this trope, i think, especially when not much has been done to create the alternate universe.
(i also didn't think adina's motivation was really necessary, but you know.)

Having read Bray's Printz-winning Going Bovine, I was sure this was going to be another crazy and wild ride. And, yes, Beauty Queens is crazy and wild.

This book is not for everyone. This is definitely over the top (WAYYYYY over the top) parody, and very dark humor.
Initial impression: this book is hysterical!
Final review: this book is just TOO MUCH. Too much and too many of everything. Too many characters, too many story lines, too many ridiculous situations, too many pages. It began to feel like finishing a marathon.
