this audiobook was over nineteen hours long and I spent easily sixteen hours hollering GIRL FUCKING COME ON ALREADY, DAMN. and finally, she did.

The Queen of the Night is the story of Lilliet Berne, a woman who went from being an orphan in the American Midwest to one of the most famous opera singers in France during the Second Empire (mid- to late-1800s). Very few know her whole story, and when someone threatens her with revealing her secrets, she does all she can to find who they are.

This is just not the right book for me. I thought it would be a good audio book because I really enjoyed an NPR interview with the author, and I was wrong. I don't like Lisa Flanagan's reading style, it's so coy and jaded and I just want to slap Liliet. Plus, this copy is one that annoyingly cuts off the first half second of each audio track (does that happen to anyone else who uses Overdrive?) which means I am subjected to boring drivel AND I often have no idea what is going on because I missed

I loved so many parts of this book and struggled in so many other places. In an effort to make Lilliet's like as fabulous and difficult as possible, too much happens and sometimes the simple moments we should've spent more time with get houses over. It was hard to understand some of her decisions. because after pages and pages of describing palaces, we often get very little of her inner motivations beyond pure impulse.
