3.5 stars. A fascinating glimpse into a closed society that is basically a real-life dystopia. It is heartbreaking how Korea was artificially divided and essentially destroyed by foreign powers. Kim is a South Korean/American journalist who posed as a missionary teacher to gain access to the country that should have been her own. While there she had no freedom of movement, and she was closely monitored. What she was allowed to see was baffling and chilling.

I was blown away by this. The way she writes about her students and her time in North Korea. She really does a good job conveying the tragedy of North Korea, a country where you can't do anything alone where you are always monitored and where you have no critical thinking skills. There is such sadness for her students in the book. If this is what life is like for the children of the privileged elite then you can only imagine what it is like for everyone else. A peek into a world I'll never get to see. Gives good insight into what it's like to live in a fishbowl, constantly being watched, monitored, etc.
