This was pretty much what I expected it to be...I read it for book club and wouldn't have chosen it myself. It's the story of April and Frank - two delusional suburbanites who think they're destined for greatness but are just like everyone else. I was impressed with the realism of the first section - Yates captured the couple's fighting and insecurities really beautifully. The rest of the book dragged and there wasn't much in the way of plot, which wouldn't have been a problem if the characters ...more

I had to remove a star because this is simply a difficult book. Not hard to read, or particularly elusive in use of language. It's just immensely painful to read such cutting and terrible thoughts and words. The fights are too real. Yates is simply too observant- he notices the tiny details that are so realistic, so painfully true, that they wound the reader.

Maybe I am over-sensitive, as I am just embarking on a marriage. I don't really want to read about a horrific failure of marriage. It's a l

This was one of those books that you just have to describe as beautiful because no words really do it justice. I definitely want to see the movie and how Leo and Kate handled the roles of Frank and April.

So. Much. Better. Than the movie. You hear that all the time, but wow was that the case here. There was so much story that got cut for time's sake in the film, and there is so much that just makes so much more sense after reading the story.

Having seen the movie first, of course I kept picturing the actors in the parts, but that was ok for me.

Good read!

Wow so that was a totally and utterly depressing book. Not really what I was expecting for an ending at all.
