This was generally a delightful, somewhere-between-children's-and-YA story. It was good to see its environmental theme (we really don't see a lot of that in YA fiction) as well as the more common focus on children who are and should be skeptical of adults, which is manifest almost everywhere in the novel, in a well-done variety of ways. It also kept me reading - I was invested in the story and wanted to find out what happened to the running boy from the very beginning. I only gave it four stars,

After reading so many of Carl Hiaasen's adult books, it was interesting to see him right for a younger audience. His theme's of fighting greed, and saving Florida's natural resources are still present, but he goes about it a different way. It was an enjoyable story about kids coming together and to save owl dens from a construction project, and the united power of "good" can triumph over evil.

Def recommend. This falls in to young adult fiction with environmental focus like his others. This was the first one I'd read though (Kel likes him) and while it's a little hard to get in to, lots of good quips and a good overall (if a tad unbelieveable) plot. Kid safe- no bad words, etc.

Fun middle reader fiction with a bit of mystery, a bit of humor, quite a few quirky characters, a lot of bumbling idiot adults, lots of unpunished middle school bullying, and a heavy emphasis on environmental impact. Quick read, pretty engaging. Over the top in many ways, but entertaining for its target audience, I'm sure.

A whole lot of fun
Just the right amount of chaos, finding new friends and a place to belong. I liked the characters and the plot. It was fun to learn the mystery of what was going on in the lot and how they solved the problem.

Hiaasen's first novel for young adults has the same kind of environmental message as his novels for adults. While offering much to think about, Hiaasen is also hilarious and extremely entertaining.
Roy Eberhardt is the new kid at Trace Middle School in Coconut Grove, Florida. Through a series of unfortunate events, he discovers the burrowing owls living in a vacant lot that is soon to be home to a brand new Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House. At the expense of the owls, of course.

I liked this, I think it is a great introduction to environmentalism for kids. As an adult reading this I just didn't get why it took so long to understand what was going on. It wrapped up rather neatly with very clear bad/good guys but i get that was because it was for preteens and that is how most books for this age group are written.
