This is a beautiful and terrifying book about climate change, set in rural Appalachia, against the protagonist's parallel journey of liberation. Kingsolver's writing is masterful, like always. So much of the story is about longing for things that seem unobtainable, when in fact they're only unobtainable because the various characters made them unobtainable for themselves. A wake-up call on climate change, as well as life's domestic decisions.

I never really connected with this book and I really wanted to. The idea of butterflies changing the lives of ecosystem of an Appalachian family sounds fascinating but I couldn't really identify with the heroine and didn't cheer her on. As a eco-buff, I did find some of the information interesting.

I adore Barbara Kingsolver's writing in general. I have read several of her novels, and am consistently impressed by her beautiful language. I really enjoyed this book, even if I thought some of the environmental warnings were a little clunky.
