Somehow I never read this in school. The first third, setting up the telling of the tale, was very slow going, but once More transitioned to describing Utopia, I quite enjoyed the book. This is no novel: there's no plot or storyline; it's pure description of the society. Still, there's a lot to like here, particularly reading this as a prelude to more modern utopia/dystopia literature. I couldn't help, for example, comparing the descriptions in Utopia to Woman on the Edge of Time, a feminist uto

One of the books I felt I had to read now that I am "old and wise" enough to get something out of it. Well, that didn't happen. To me it was just a story of a fictitious world that uses all these methods to become the perfect place. Truly unachievable and could never happen, but oh well. I'm not quite sure what I expected this book to be, but a rambling political treatise wasn't it. With that said, for all that Utopia is built up to be, you couldn't pay me to live there. What was most interesting to me was that it seemed to me to be the setting for some dystopian novel where people were supposed to be content, but there was no room for individuality, so it was just ripe for an uprising. Perhaps I read too much. :)

Best part about this book: I figured out why Drew Barrymore quotes it in Ever After. An interesting story of a utopian society, but all in all I wish the author had shortened the phrases and elongated the ideas because the sentences are horribly long and the ideas too short to really apply to modern society (though they are really interesting).
