Man, did I ever love this book as a kid, knowing next to nothing about the real story and being unaware that O'Dell was not himself a Native person. Very interesting to read it again in the context of an indigenous studies class, and to look at essays from Native scholars contextualizing and critiquing the work!

One of my favorite books in school.
I read this right about when it was first published. I have a vivid memory of my elementary school librarian talking to us about it.
