Definite points for creativity: as a kid I would have adored this solely for how vivid and creative and unusual and imaginative it is. On the other hand that sometimes makes it feel a bit too jumbled, as you whip from aesthetic to aesthetic, to one type of story after another. I think the author posted this story online as she was working on it, and it kind of shows. It coheres more as it progresses, though, and gets points for several interesting twists.

I get that people are attracted to this book because of its nostalgia and weirdness factors, but I just couldn't stay interested. After getting through like a third of it and identifying the witches from Macbeth, The Wizard of Oz elements, the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland elements, the Peter Pan elements, the Phantom Tollbooth elements, and the Wrinkle in Time elements, I was over it.
