Every teenaged girl, from 13 up, needs to read this. And adult women could probably get a lot out of it too. Hepperman's poems take fairy tales, put a modern twist to them and turn them into poetry that requires the reader to think about our society and women's sense of themselves. I wish I had read this when I was 14 or 15--I think it could have saved me some real grief.

I mean, it's YA's answer to Anne Sexton's collection from a billion years ago, and that's a great thing to have in YA, but it's a lot of white cis feminism, not feminism for everyone, and that got old real fast. I think even a teen who has had less exposure to deconstruction of beauty myths would probably be a bit underwhelmed by that and bored by how obvious and aggressively anti-beauty myths these are. I didn't dislike this colllection? I live in a world full of tumblr poetry, I can forgive many things, but this collection feels so insubstantial, and that's disappointing; maybe if there was a little more there there, I'd be able to remember anything beyond like, the human centipede piece after I'd finished it. the premise is so good! but mostly it just made me grateful I'm no longer a teenager.
