This is my kind of book---an historical mystery fictionalized with vivid characterization and great writing. I really wanted to love it, and parts of it, I did love. However, my lasting feeling with the book is one of confusion. The author weaves together several different story lines---a tragically unlucky family of sailors, a young and yet unknown Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and spiritualism, a contemporary craze. Lately I've been really lusting after reads about ships lost at sea, or adventures on the high sea complete with pirates, adventuring tales, and scary ghosts. So, as you can imagine, The Ghost of Mary Celeste falls right into line with what I've been wanting so desperately and it came into my hands at a time that was perfect for the reading of it.
