I LOVE LOVED Wonderstruck by this author and I love the way he tells a story with pictures alone. This book was super disappointing because I felt like he kept repeating himself. He tells the story through pictures and then describes it again a couple of times in written word. It was an okay book, but not as easy to read or as interesting as Wonderstruck. The mystery had great build up but then was a bit disappointing as well.

As usual, Brian Selznick has brought together the story of a shipwreck in 1766, a family with generations of actors, a directionless boy and his unknown uncle, a mysterious house, and a supportive network of strangers and made them into a cohesive, sad, but uplifting story. The Marvels made me think about family, ancestry, destiny, the nature of storytelling, the fast pace of our "upgrade" society, and the way humans give items meaning.
