I've had this sitting on my Kindle for a long time and finally decided to read it before the movie comes to Netflix. I'm so glad I did because I enjoyed every minute of it! Willowdean is so confident and comfortable in her own skin, until people make her second guess herself. I loved the new friendships she forms and how she goes about entering the pageant. I wish I had a book like this to read when I was in high school, but I probably would have envied Will for the attention she got from guys. ...more

This was delightful. Tons of fun, plus body positivity, Texas hilarity, Dolly Parton, and drag queens. Read it now, before you watch the Netflix adaptation, which is fun, but whitewashes Hannah (though the Hannah cast is, to be fair, amazing, and possibly better, character-wise, than she's written in the book. But still...), eliminates a couple of characters (Amanda and Mitch) completely and greatly streamlines or changes what felt like important parts of the book. If you are interested in any o ...more

One of the few times I will say the movie was better than the book.

I didn’t like the second romantic interest. I thought the mom was pretty unsupportable ant unlikable through most of it. The ended felt forced, the friendship, the boy, the mom all coming together unrealistically and neatly. I will watch the movie for a third time to feel good about Willowdean and her life.
