I spend a lot of time thinking about how fairy tales are put together, with a particular eye for the odd and even absurd ways the characters behave. For example, when your fiance dumps you for someone else, what makes you think "oh, I'll dress up like a man, find eleven women who look just like me and dress them up as men, and we'll go be huntsmen for him" is a good strategy? I don't know what it is about prohibition-era books, but they all seem to fall flat for me. This is in spite of all of my hopes that every time I pick one up, it will be THE one. You know, the one that lives up to all of my hopes and dreams. Is that a bit unrealistic? Yes. But I know it's also doable as I've seen some fantastic things done on screen that fulfill that exact wish (Boardwalk Empire anyone?). Interesting take on the fairy tale Twelve Dancing Princesses. The roaring twenties come alive with speakeasies, jazz, and, of course, dancing. The sisters are well-drawn characters, especially Jo and Lou. I would have liked to know more of the father's background, his relationship with their mother, his character (which seemed very flat). The final scene came a bit too quickly and neatly; might have been better done as an epilogue. ...more
