This book came out in the late 80s, which means I probably did read it as a kid. But I probably read it in quick succession with other wilderness survival books (Jack London, I’m looking at you), so I didn’t remember reading it. And I frankly didn’t remember a thing about the plot, but I think that’s ok considering that more than 20 years have passed since I read it. Although I enjoyed this survival story, I thought it was awfully convenient that Brian's mother just happened to give him a hatchet as a gift before he climbed on board the plane to go see his father. And that there just happened to be a windstorm that brought enough of the plane out of the lake so he could get the survival kit out...and then not be able to use it! The weaving of the divorce into the plot really didn't work too well for me, either.

I finally read this Newbery Award-winning classic. It's is a good book about finding your inner strength and being resourceful, and keeping everyday life's problems in perspective. I enjoyed learning about how Brian coped with his problems (though the vegetarian part of me didn't relish the hunting bits), and it's well-written for a children's book - interesting enough for adult readers.

i hated this book. i think i hated it because of the movie we had to watch in school, where they show the dead pilot. i also didn't like the main character. at all. so. there you go. i would read it again, but i don't want to.
