I actually liked this significantly more than Legends and Lattes, which I already liked plenty. There’s something Discworld-esque about the way they stumble into book selling norms. The found family element is strong, and I loved, LOVED Satchel. Good to see a younger and less wise Viv, too, and I actually really enjoyed Iridia and Highlark. Miss Zelia and Berk deserve their own book, too.

This prequel is an excellent follow-up to Legends and Lattes. Viv is laid up in a small seaside town, and in her boredom she decides to help some local businesses. There's a bookshop, there's a bakery, there's even a mysterious author living outside of town. I especially love how bonedust came into play. I love this world and all of its denizens. Because it's a prequel, you know Viv won't stay in the town, but I love how she helped out while she was there.

We get to see Viv at the very beginning of her mercenary career, when an injury forces her to wait out her healing time in a small seaside village with very little to entertain her. Boredom sends her into the musty bookstore, which she emerges from with a book and possibly a new friend.
