Great re-read in 2023 as I prepped questions for my students' Battle of the Books. Love Draper's writing style, and I love introducing Melody to my students and hearing them talk so enthusiastically about this book!

Melody is a brilliant girl with a virtually photographic memory, yet most people who meet her assume that she is mentally retarded because her cerebral palsy keeps her from speaking and controlling her body's movements. A young classroom aide's discovery of a communication tool, allows Melody to compete in the Whiz Kids competition against her classmates, but how will they feel about her 'instant' intelligence? A good story that avoids predictable and easy answers.
