If you want to pad your yearly book list with a bona fide classic but don’t want to commit to something long and challenging, Tom Sawyer is a solid choice. I had a copy on my shelf and I hadn’t read it, so it seemed like an obvious choice. And, honestly, it’s fine - pretty good.

At first, I thought Twain’s dialect was going to be really distracting and make for an unpleasant read, but a few chapters in and it started to flow pretty naturally. The whole thing feels too episodic and low stakes for ...more
