There can be no doubt how Anne Bronte felt about her experiences as a governess. Agnes Grey feels very autobiographical in those terms, with the spoiled children and the careless individuals of the upper class leading to a true understanding of how difficult such a position must have been for a young woman of this era. Poor Anne Bronte - when I read "Unquiet Soul"(a biography of
Charlotte Bronte) a few years ago, the thing I remembered from
it was the thin veneer of jealousy that Charlotte felt towards
Anne. Charlotte and Emily had been soul sisters and Anne, the
pesky little sister who wanted to tag along, but Charlotte, unlike
the others, had to deal with the real world, and when she returned
to Haworth it was to find that Anne had forged a bond with her
favourite and Charlotte never seemed to be able to forgive ...more

I enjoyed this much more than I expected. It was a short light tale of good Agnes, who's rational virtues are rewarded. I'd say it lacked both the humor and sophistication of Austen, but not as pontificating as Elliot. the best thing I've read by a Bronte. ...more
