Steinbeck is one of my favorite writers, but too many animal stories have tragic endings. I really hate it when they involve loss for a child. Nothing against the writer.

Its a lovely day in the American West. The sun is shining. It is a day of playfulness and joy ... all because a little boy and is gifted his first horse. This is Black Beauty for a boy. Right???

Wrong.

This book is written by Steinbeck after all. There will be no happily ever after. There will be tragic death, mean and tough life lessons, broken promises and promises kept with horrific costs. It will also be full of symbolism and will provoke you to think.

And it will be a beautiful reading experie

I am working my way through the Steinbeck novels I haven't read yet. Red Pony's main character is a young boy, Jody. He is just starting to cease being a boy, and learning about life and death on his father's Ranch in California. ...more
