What Members Thought

By Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, and adapted for radio by Michael Hastings.
Don Fabrizio, a member of the old Italian aristocracy, contemplates his obsolescence amidst the great social changes during the Risorgimento of the 19th century. The head of an opulent household in Sicily, he reflects nostalgically on the past as his family grows to maturity and Garibaldi's republican movement puts an end to the feudal system and the traditions of the old bourgeoisie.

Referred to in That Summer in Sicily: A Love Story, but do I like the text style?
Thanks to Laura I listened to this on BBC. I totallly enjoyed myself. If felt like going to a theater, not like reading a book. As a theater experience I would give it 4 stars, but as a book just 3. I give it more for the listening b/c the experience was great. The content of the book I felt was less amazing. I am glad I listened rather than read it. ...more

4.5 stars really. For the last few years I have been trying to read books off of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Boxall. The Leopard by Lampedusa is a book that if it hadn't been on the list, I might never have read it. All I can say is that the Leopard was truly a wonderful read, even in translation.
I won't say much about the plot, except to say that it takes place in Sicily from 1860 - 1910, during the unification of Italy or Risorgimento. ...more

too abstract for such a concrete satire...it got boring, but had its moments. i recommend the film version. it's really good.
