How do you “review” a book that has stood the test of centuries? I read The Divine Comedy as a Lenten practice. From a spiritual point of view, it is profound, and puts to shame the contemporary writers who are lauded as coming out with new understandings about God. I grew weary of the iambic pentameter and of the way it forces the writer to come up with syllables purely for form’s sake, but still, the poem shows a virtuosity that astounds. If I had had more time I would’ve read every footnote.
