I’m not sure what I expected from this book, but whatever it was, this wasn’t it. It is about a group of children who are taken by pirates, so perhaps I thought it would be in the vein of Treasure Island. It is about the children and more or less from their viewpoint, so perhaps I thought it would be more juvenile or innocent. The book reminds me a bit of Lord of the Flies. I was surprised at the almost abandoned freedom the children had in Jamaica while being totally enthralled by the wonderful sense of setting the author created. Masterful character descriptions, including the self absorption of the entire family. Emily saved herself a bit of trouble while she had no problem sending the crew to die. Beastly child, she.
