What Members Thought

This book must be classified as a "MUST READ"! Just marvelous. It can be read on so many different levels - for enjoyment of Bulgakov's imagination and marvelous characters, to laugh at the satirical comments or to analyze its philosophical sense. I was so surprised that I too would enjoy this book because normally I do not like satire or "unbelievable" cartoon characters. I was also originally put off by the theological references. So this book totally surprised me! I rarely read a book several

What to say about this book?
Bulgakov started to write this book in 1929. However, since he didn't believe in his future as a russian novelist, he simply burned the manuscript in 1930. A second draft was written in 1936 and the final version was completed only in 1940 just before his death.
The plot comprises two stories: in the first one, Voland who is visited by the Devil; the second one is the re-creation tale of Christ facing his tormentor Pontius Pilate in a t ...more

Brilliant. I could not possibly find any more words to explain how truly great this book is.

One of the funniest and most terrifying portrayals of Lucifer I have ever read.
I imagined Mick & Co. amused and deeply captivated by the salient characters in the novel - Woland, Margherita and the Poet before 1968, when Sympathy for the Devil was released, becoming part of the history of music.
An exciting narration of the ordeal of the prophet and the role of anguished Pontius Pilate who only loves his dog. A work of timeless value.
