What Members Thought

Edgar Allan Poe’s highly symbolic short story about death and the futility of attempting to avoid it, is one of the most read short stories of all time. In these days of pestilence abroad, it made for a reminder that things could be worse, but also that time marches regardless of circumstance and that death is to come for all of us, and often when least expected.

Another one of my favorites of Poe's. So creepy. Maybe it's my imagination but I can totally imagine something like this happening. I remember being at a dance club once in my college years and I got the same feeling described in the story. It was almost like a pure evil. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves but I felt distinctly uneasy all of a sudden. I remember getting out of there pretty quickly. Poe hit fast and hard with this incredible short story about a deadly plague that swept across the land and a group of wealthy people who attempted to seal themselves off from it. A wonderfully creepy, gothic story.

I picked this collection of short stories up for my birthday. It was my first Edgar Allan Poe. This particular collection was curated to coincide with the Netflix series Fall of the House of Usher (which is also included in this collection). Each of the stories contained in here are the inspirations for the characters, episodes and more from the show.
