The stories (Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, etc.) are all good. Everyone should read Irving's stories. The travel essays, on the other hand, were nothing but snooze-worthy. They were so bad and so numerous that they overbalanced the stories for me and threw my overall rating of the book to only two stars. ...more

This one WAS worth listening to because of the writing by Washington Irving.The ghost part didn't do a thing to me, but I enjoyed the description of New England landscape in the fall.

I had seen a movie version of Sleepy Hollow years ago, but I hadn't read this short story until now. I loved the descriptions of rural areas around Sleepy Hollow, and I like that in the end you really don't know what happened. ...more

I had high expectations for this one and I think that it suffered for it. I have seen movies at times long after everyone else in the world ... movies which everyone raves about ... and I end up disappointed. I think my reaction to this story is similar to my reaction to those movies. They simply cannot live up to my hopes.

I wasn't scared or spooked. I wasn't shocked. I wasn't fascinated or even intrigued. There was no surprise.
