I have felt like a kid in a candy store lately, my books have been that good. Here’s another one that is virtually unread these days, but such a charming story and so well written. One of my favorite writers is Nevil Shute. He has a style that is easy to read and so absorbing, and absorbed is exactly what I was from the moment I opened the book and found two Londoners sipping Marsala in their “club” during a bombing raid. Each author has their own special style. How would I describe Nevil Shute's? His books have a “feel good” tone, and yet at the same time they don't shy away from difficult themes. As with fairy tales, you get scary and suspenseful tidbits, but at the conclusion you feel satisfied. Content.

This novel is said to be based on a true life story. Yet nobody calls it non-fiction. There are just too many coincidences for me to accept this as being totally true to life. The story is about a seventy year ...more
