With lovely, descriptive prose the author develops characters, paints the scenery, and takes us inside the culture of an obscure town in southern Italy, pre WWII. This a gem.

I always envy countries that have that one writer who leaves a legacy by explaining the roots of their modern society. This is a beautiful, timeless book.
