Not so terrible as claimed by some reviewers, on the contrary.
The book is very well written and certainly had inspired many authors in the genre of horror fiction. A very good surprise indeed.

It is rare that I read horror of any sort, but this one has been on my radar for quite some time, and so I finally checked out the audio of Overdrive and was happily surprised. There are no murders, monsters or gore here. It is more about psychological fear of the unknown, and I found it a true snapshot of what it is like to live with that fear. I liked this one much more than expected.

First of all, if you loved the Netflix series, you should know that story told in the novel is very different. I wasn't aware of that before reading it but it didn't bother me and left me full of admiration for both Shirley Jackson and the writers of the show who took risks and created their own compelling and soulful story.

I'm not sure how to rate horror mostly because I don't read much of it, so I haven't yet figured out if I should give more stars because it scared me more, more stars because I enjoyed it more or what. I actually don't really enjoy being scared. It's very masochistic. Anyway, I read this ages ago and it's very effective because I remember most of it, especially the climax which amazed me.

Deserving of its reputation. An eerie book. Not as gripping maybe by today's standards but well worth the read.
