This is my book! The experience of reading it was so familiar, so close, like meeting myself in another time. Her dad is my dad, and her mom is my mom. I laughed and cried so hard with those resemblances...

The idea of a "family dictionary" is so touching! All the stories and phrases that we say and listen over the years together... the familiarity of it! The boredom and fun of repetition... At the same time, the cultural stories of the anti-war and anti-fascists

Ginzburg makes us fall in love with her and her family. She describes their daily lives and faults with so much humour and warmth. And then, the novel delivers a punch in the stomach that leaves you breathless. A masterpiece about fascism and antisemitism in 20th century Europe.
