5 stars after the second swim. A poignant homage to a people lost told by a voice that seemed to be already fully formed. McCarthy forces us to slow down and roll around in the beauty and eloquence of his words.

4 stars after reading the first time, diving back in for a deeper swim. I am striving to read/re-read McCarthy’s works before the release of his new books in the Fall.
If I appear to be flailing, please throw me a life preserver.

I am a fan of McCarthy’s work, but this book was a struggle for me. Filthy, cruel, and immoral characters and page after page of grimy, depressing scenes made it a chore.
