I did not read the entire collection, only the title story.
A rather droll little story of an illicit love affair and the ease with which a person can find his life changed.

Although I do love the darkness in Russian literature, I am not a big fan of short stories and this collection was no different. The stories are dramatic, sad and filled with hateful characters. Chekov's writing is meticulous in its descriptions of place and depicts daily life very well. I believe that Chekov had a very good understanding of the lives people led in his country at the time.
