This story, published in 1942, was a contribution by Steinbeck to the effort to mentally shore up the countries under invasion by Germany at that time. In a town, in a country that is almost without doubt meant to mirror Norway, a conquering invasion force is subjected to the unfaltering resistance of a free people.

The plot is fairly predictable, because we know how the Nazi’s operated during the war when met with resistance. The characters are more stereotypes than individuals, although Steinbe

This is filled with ironic humor. Line after line after line. Or is my brain twisted?!

Isn't it kind of funny that the value of propaganda, which is what this was when it was originally written in 1942, all depends on which side you stand? Propaganda is usually seen as "bad literature". Not here. This is the first time I have read propaganda that gets its message across through humor, and it is good!

I will tell you right up front -- I love Steinbeck. This is my 8th book of his that I have read in less than two months. I like the attention he gives to every detail when describing his characters and settings. I love the simplicity with which he writes. I love that he can describe the worst of life but make it a beautiful exploration of so ...more

I read several of John Steinbeck books in High School and College, and I have been re-reading them again, particularly the short novels. I really enjoyed The Moon is Down.
