Oh my, this is dripping in symbolism—but I like it. I like it a lot! It’s to be picked up when you’re in a mood for analyzing what characters and their actions figuratively and metaphorically represent. There is more being said than that on the surface. Figuring out the symbolism is fun.

I am at a complete loss trying to explain John Steinbeck to people; trying to explain why exactly I LOVE him so much! His books are astoundingly beautiful pieces of work written with a quiet simplicity that confuses me. I do know one reason -- and maybe that is the whole of it -- that I love his books. I love John Steinbeck. His use of language, character and conflict over the span of a single day makes this book identifiable and realistic. He really brings to life the flawed and dishonest characters, their behavior and personalities. He is a master of character development. I am always sad when I come to the end of a Steinbeck novel.
