OK, I've tried giving Dickens another try. We seem to rub each other the wrong way! The book is making me miserable. I see no point in continuing. A bit more than half is enough! Keep in mind, this is a very long book.

The story is plot oriented rather than focusing on character portrayal. To make things worse, the characters are mere caricatures. I think people are complicated and this is how I want them drawn. Caricatures bore me. If it’s plot, action and surprises hat attract you, I’ll bet my

I was enamored by the beauty of the language and detail almost 3/4 of the way through (first half the best)--and it continues to the end. It made me realize how bereft we are of the language of color and texture in character, setting, and atmosphere, etc., in language today. So the novel was a wonderful indulgence in our great, VAST language. But the plot ties up all loose ends very quickly in the last 15-20% of the book, as is the case in Dickens' novels, though not all of them. The not unexpec ...more
